Summary

US Airways was founded in 1940 and quickly grew to one of the largest nationwide carrier with powerful and modern fleet and plenty of services offered in terms of passengers and cargo transportation throughout USA. A bit sooner, the company has extended its routes with flights to Central America and Western Europe. At present, US Airlines are reaching major business centers and vacation destinations within 37 US states including Alaska and Hawaii, major business destinations in Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and 16 destinations in 9 countries of Western Europe including Great Britain, France, Spain, Nederland, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Germany and Sweden. US Airways has its headquarters and major hub situated in Charlotte and secondary hub situated in Philadelphia, wherefrom all domestic and international flights are operated.

Check-in times

Passengers of both domestic and international flights may check in online, by fax or phone, at ticket counters and self-service kiosks available in the majority of airports. Check-in deadline is 30 minutes for domestic and 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure for international flights, however, it is recommended to arrive at least two hours prior to scheduled departure of the flight to allow enough time to complete all necessary procedures. This especially concerns passengers traveling with checked baggage.

Baggage allowance

Passengers of both domestic and international flights are allowed to carry two pieces of checked baggage, one piece of carry-on baggage and one additional personal item. This quantity of items not exceeding the following limitations is carried for free. Applicable service fees are charged for items exceeding free baggage allowance limitations and for each piece of excess baggage.
Basically, each piece of checked baggage is limited to 62 linear inches and 50lbs. However, passengers of First or Envoy classes and passengers traveling to, or from Japan are allowed to carry two pieces of checked baggage limited to 62 linear inches and 70lbs each. $80 service fee is charged for each item of checked baggage exceeding 50lbs limit and carried by passengers of economy class and passengers flying to, or from the majority of European destinations. $80 service fee is charged for each piece of checked baggage between 71 and 100lbs regardless of ticket class. Note that some European destinations will not accept checked baggage exceeding 70lbs. Military traveling customers on active duty status are allowed to carry two pieces of checked baggage up to 99lbs each free of charge. $80 service fee is charged for each piece of checked baggage over 62 linear inches, but not exceeding maximum allowed limit of 80 linear inches. Any piece of checked baggage exceeding 100lbs and 80 linear inches will not be accepted on passenger flights, therefore must be carried by cargo or other means arranged by passenger.
One piece of carry-on baggage must not exceed 50 linear inches on both domestic and international flights and 45 linear inches on US Airways Express flights. There is no weight limit set for carry-on baggage, but however, it must be reasonable. Note that carry-on baggage must be stowed in either overhead compartment, or underneath the seat. Also note that it is strongly recommended to carry all valuable and fragile items in your carry-on bag. This includes keys, documents, currencies, jewelry, antiques, collectibles, etc. Passengers of all flights are allowed to carry one additional personal item that must be a rather light, small and handy item that can be easily managed by passenger during the flight. This can be purse or briefcase, umbrella or walking stick, laptop computer or reasonable amount of reading materials, coat or wrap, crutches, or fully collapsible wheelchair. Note that all Canadian and US airports as well as many European airports have different lists of forbidden items, therefore it is recommended to contact travel agent to find out what items are forbidden in airports of origin and destinations in advance. Passengers traveling with infant carried on adult’s lap and paying 10% of applicable adult fare are allowed to carry 1 piece of carry-on baggage not exceeding 45 linear inches and one fully collapsible stroller, child restraint device, or approved child seat necessary for flight.

Child fares

Basically, there are no special child fares applied on all US Airways routes. However, plenty of special child fares and discounts are available or some routes depending on ticket class, route, season of the year and sometimes even time of the day. Contact travel agent to find out whether any child fares and discounts are available for a particular flight or route. Child fares can be used by children between 14 days and 12 years, except of infants between 14 days and 2 years carried on adult’s lap free of charge. Note that only one lap child is allowed per ticketed adult and only one lap child can travel in same row of seats, due to limited quantity of oxygen masks available on each row of seats. Also note that seats carrying infants under two years old must be equipped with child restraint devices or approved child seats.
Unaccompanied Minors service is obligatory for children between 5 and 14 years old traveling alone and is optional for adolescents between 15 and 17 years old traveling alone. $40 fee is charged in terms of Unaccompanied Minors service for one-way non-stop or direct flight and $75 fee is charged for one-way connecting trip on domestic flights.
