Summary

Spirit Airlines, the largest privately-held airline in USA, was founded in 1980 as charter carrier providing tour packages to major nationwide leisure destinations such as Las Vegas, Bahamas, Atlantic City, etc. First fights of scheduled service were made in the beginning of 1993 and since then Spirit Airlines grew to the largest privately-held nationwide and international airline serving 27 markets within the US and international flights to Bahamas and the Caribbean operating up to 150 daily flights from headquarters and major hub situated in Fort Lauderdale. Since 2005 Spirit Airlines reached their goal to provide the cheapest service to the Caribbean with new flights to Nassau. Today Spirit Airlines offers passengers safe and punctual flights throughout US and abroad with plenty of important, quality and convenient services, great reward programs and more than reasonable fairs, especially on flights to vacation destinations.

Check-in time

It is recommended to arrive 3 hours prior to scheduled departure of the flight to allow enough time for all necessary procedures. This especially concerns passengers with pets, infants and lots of checked baggage. Check-in deadline for domestic flights is 30 minutes and an hour for all international flights. The exception is flights to Las Vegas, where check-in deadline is 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure of the flight. Passengers that checked-in online, printed their boarding passes and travel without checked baggage may proceed directly to the gate.

Baggage allowance

Passengers of both domestic and international flights are allowed to carry two pieces of checked baggage, one piece of carry-on baggage and one personal item (may be restricted). Each piece of checked baggage must not exceed the limit of 50lbs. First piece of checked baggage is limited to 62 linear inches (width + height + length) and second piece of checked baggage is limited to 55 linear inches. Overweight pieces of checked baggage over 50lbs, but not exceeding 70lbs are carried for $25 each. Overweight pieces of checked baggage over 70lbs, but not exceeding 99lbs are carried for $100 each. Oversized pieces of checked baggage between 62 and 115 linear inches are carried for $100 each. Oversized pieces of checked baggage between 115 and 160 linear inches are carried for $150 each. Oversized and overweight baggage exceeding the limits of 99lbs and 160 linear inches will not be accepted on passenger flights and must be carried by Spirit Airlines cargo, or other means arranged by passenger. Each subsequent piece of excess baggage is carried for $100. Overweight pieces of excess baggage between 50 and 70lbs are carried for $125 each. Overweight pieces of excess baggage between 70 and 99lbs are carried for $150 each. Oversized pieces of excess baggage between 62 and 115 linear inches are carried for $100 each. Oversized pieces of excess baggage between 115 and 160 linear inches are carried for $150 each. Surfboards, Scuba tanks and bicycles are carried for $50 each. Note that excess, oversized and overweight baggage is not accepted on flights to or from Bahamas, Dominican Republic and Jamaica.
One piece of carry-on baggage is limited to 45 linear inches, 40lbs and must fit either underneath the seat or in overhead compartment. Additional personal item is optionally allowed on some flights. Additional personal item must be rather light and small item that can be easily managed by passenger during the flight. This can be a laptop computer, briefcase or purse, overcoat or wrap, umbrella or walking stick, binoculars, crutches, photo or video camera, etc. Contact travel agent to find out whether personal items are accepted on particular flights and destinations.

Child Fares

There are no special child fares on any of Spirit Airlines flights. Infants under two years traveling on adult’s lap are carried for free. Only one infant can be carried by one adult and only one infant can travel on adult’s lap in same row of seats, due to the fact that each row of seats is equipped with four oxygen masks only. In case if there are more than one infant traveling with one adult, second and all other infants must occupy a separate seat equipped with child restraint seat or belts. Infants occupying separate seat are charged applicable adult fare.
Unaccompanied Minors service is obligatory for children between 5 and 11 years traveling alone and is optional for adolescents between 12 and 17 years old. Unaccompanied minors between 5 and 11 years old are not accepted on connecting flights. $50 service fee is charged for each unaccompanied minor for one-way travel.
