Check-in time

Passengers traveling on domestic flights and on flights between US and Canada are allowed to check-in up to 75 minutes prior to departure of the flight. Passengers traveling on international flights including Mexico and the Caribbean are allowed to check-in up to two hours prior to departure of the flight. These are recommended times that allow enough time for all procedures, however, check-in and boarding gate deadlines are a bit different. Passengers traveling on domestic flights and flights between US and Canada are required to check-in at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure of the flight (boarding gate deadline is 15 minutes). Exceptions are flights to Denver, Atlanta, Newark, Los Angeles, Tampa and Washington, where check-in deadline is 45 minutes and 60 minutes on flights to Las Vegas. On international flights checking-in stops in an hour prior to departure of the flight and boarding gate deadline is 30 minutes.

Baggage allowance

Northwest Airlines allows two items of checked baggage, one item of carry-on baggage and one personal item carried in passengers’ cabin. It is strongly recommended to attach additional label specifying airports of origin and destination, name and contact information of the owner inside each piece of checked baggage. Two pieces of checked baggage, one piece of carry on baggage and one personal item meeting requirements and limitations specified below are carried for free per each ticketed passenger. Note that baggage allowance is same for the majority of destinations within US, but may differ for some international destinations. Therefore it is recommended to contact travel agent and find out conditions and limitations of a particular destination to prevent unwanted occasions. For instance it is prohibited to import some pets to Hawaii and there are special regulations regarding transportation of liquids on all flights.
One item of carry-on baggage is limited to 45 linear inches (length + width + height) and 40 pounds. Additional personal item carried in passengers’ cabin must be rather light, small and handy item that can be easily managed by passenger during the flight. For instance, this can be a laptop computer, reasonable quantity of reading materials, walking stick or crutches, overcoat or wrap, reasonable quantity of foods intended for in-flight consumption, child seat, or wheelchair, etc. Note that it is recommended to carry all valuable and fragile items (except of large items) in your carry-on bag. This includes jewelry, currencies, keys, documents and other valuable papers. Also note that your carry-on baggage must fit underneath the seat or in overhead compartment and make no impediment for other passengers during the flight. In case if there is something large, but extremely fragile and valuable (for instance big antique vase) you can carry it in passengers’ cabin having purchased a seat near you for applicable adult fare.
Checked baggage limitations may vary for different destination and in very rare cases may also depend on capacity of baggage compartment of a particular aircraft. Generally two pieces of checked baggage limited to 62 linear inches and 50 pounds each are allowed on domestic flights. Passengers traveling on international flights originating from US are allowed to carry three pieces of checked baggage limited to 70 pounds and 62 linear inches. Each piece of checked baggage exceeding the limit of 62 inches, but not larger than 160 linear inches is carried for $80 service fee. Each piece of checked baggage exceeding the limit of 50 pounds (domestic limit) and 70 pounds (international limit), but not exceeding 100 pounds will be carried for $25 (domestic flights) and $50 (international flights). Any piece of checked baggage exceeding either size (160 linear inches), or weight (100 pounds) limits, or both limits together will not be accepted on passengers’ aircraft and must be carried by Northwest Cargo, or other means arranged by passenger. In case if you are planning to carry more than two pieces (domestic limit) or three pieces (international limit) of checked baggage, you will be charged $80 for first excess piece, $105 for next three excess pieces and $180 for all further pieces of checked baggage. These excess pieces of checked baggage mustn’t exceed allowed limits of size and weight.
